Things I can't do now that I could successfully do in high school.

It was brought to my attention this week that I have one pair of black sunglasses, and a back up pair of freebie sunglasses I keep in the car.

When I was in high school I had both a black and a brown pair of sunglasses that I would color coordinate to my outfits each and everyday. And both pairs of sunglasses cost over $70. Not to mention what I could do with purses, belts, and shoe coordination. Now, my sunglasses cost $12.99, I'm lucky if I don't lose them every third week, it's something to be celebrated if I don't have to turn around to get my purse after leaving the house, and I don't even remember the last time I wore a belt that matched my shoes.

When I was in high school my entire being centered around having something to do on Saturday night. Now, it's a little more like... "Oh, is girls night THIS Saturday? Hmmm... What is there that I can say/do/fabricate to get out of doing this so I can stay home in my PJs?" Just a little wine on the couch in my pajamas is really all I'm looking for out of a weekend these days.

When I was in high school I could stay up until 2am finishing homework, get up, shower BLOW DRY my hair, and be to school for a 6:30am student government meeting. These days I'm lucky to make it to 10, which includes a nap on he couch before bed. There are days when I am in bed, sound asleep by 8:30. The only reason I know I even still own a blow dryer is because my hand grazes it on its way to the dry shampoo. And as for being anywhere by 6:30.... HA is really the only word that comes to mind.

When I was in high school, I read for fun. I'd love to tell you I'm doing that now, but I'm not. I actually just considered scheduling daily reading time so as to encourage some kind of brain function other than what happens when I engage in a General Hospital marathon at the end of the week.

When I was in high school I cared what I looked like... Like a lot. These days... Well, I care a little less. I don't wear makeup to work, I've started wearing flats everywhere, and I barely remember my last mani/pedi. I'm not a slob, by any means, I'm just a little less 4 inch heels, pedicures every 3 weeks, and makeup on at 6am.

When I was in high school, I'd never write this post because appearances were super important. Now... I'm more than happy to admit to you that in the the last few days I have worn pajamas and gym clothes. Which can alternate for one another, yes.

  1. Oh, this is making me laugh so hard. I used to spend FORTY-FIVE MINUTES each morning ON MY HAIR. It was the 80s and my hair was straight. That was a tragedy. I had to wash, blow dry, then meticulously curl it and spray it to death. I would do this every morning no matter how late I went to bed. Now I have 5 minutes or less for my hair. Usually the "or less". I would also want makeup on, including mascara, to walk to the mailbox. I now go entire weeks without ever putting make up on.

    1. It is absurd to me the amount of time I used to spend on my hair.

And I'd dress up for a road trip. Jeans, a nice top, and a full face of makeup. Just to drive in the car with my parents and my sister, who in fact saw me completely makeup-less in the hotel. Now it's yoga pants and a sweatshirt.

At least I know I'm capable of change...?
